 Orthodontic Aligners Internship

Summary:

The Internship will expose intens to the necessary knowledge to assess, diagnose, and manage simple, moderate and complex orthodontic patients (specifically dental crowding, Class II, III, deep bite & open bite malocclusions) requesting clear aligners for their orthodontic treatment. This program aims to create a learning environment through observation and in-depth discussion about cases including complex cases. The intern will gain extensive exposure to the consultation, diagnostic, and treatment planning processes relative to clear aligners. The intern will work alongside multiple preceptors with professional skills in designing, applying, and controlling corrective appliances using clear aligners to bring teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance. The intern will also be expected to attend and observe clinical sessions involving clear aligners treatment, giving them broad exposure to various aspects of Orthodontics using clear aligners.

Objectives:

At the end of the internship, the intern will exhibit in-depth knowledge and receive comprehensive training in the scope of orthodontics using clear aligners. The intern will assess, plan, and observe treatment using clear aligners. The intern will gain experience in non-surgical management of complex Orthodontic problems and the possible treatment using clear aligners. The intern will also gain experience in interprofessional collaboration and communication with general dentists and other dental and medical specialists in several regions across North America. 

Primary Focus:

A broad focus on orthodontics using clear aligners within both adolescent and adult populations will be the primary focus of the internship program. The intern is expected to act as an observer in the delivery of clear aligners both private practice settings and orthodontic residency settings.

 

Clinical exposure:

The intern will work alongside the precepting faculty at Orthodontic residency and private practice clinics based on opportunities to observe and discuss, allowing the intern to individualize their training needs. The Intern would observe patient care under the direct supervision of clinical attendant.

Clinical exposure:

The intern is expected to participate in 3 research projects. The intern is expected to present posters at regional and international conferences, and submit at least 1 manuscript for publication.

Classes

 

This internship is composed of 25 classes each class is 1-2 months long.

Dr. Tarek El Bialy:

1.    Introduction to clear aligners

Biomechanics of clear aligners and specific types of tooth movement

Attachments and planning over engineering.

Treatment of severe crowding cases in growing children and adults

Transverse discrepancies

Vertical problems (open bite and dep bite)

Sagittal problems (Class II, Class III malocclusions).

Clinical (observational and in-depth discussion) included in each module.

o  a. Orthodontic residency Clinic –

▪      Interns are expected to observe and participate in the treatment planning of at least 20 cases.

o  b. Affiliate Clinic (observational in private practice) –

▪      Number of hours

●     35 hours (two-week intensive observership).

Didactic Exposure (recommended)

Scheduling

The weekly schedule will be 60% clinical observational and in-depth discussion practice with patients and 40% didactic. The clinical part will include observational and in-depth discussion working with patients and the didactic part will include treatment planning session, case reviews, and the below courses under didactic.

Research opportunity:

Research is mandatory, with expectations for poster presentations and publications. There are several ongoing studies that the intern can join.

 

Final Clinical Assessment:

At the end of the internship, the internship director will conduct a final clinical assessment.

A grade of Pass or Fail will be issued based on the intern competency.

 

Tuition & Fees

The cost of each module is USD 10,000.00

The complete bundle ( all 6 modules) is USD 50,000.00

Eligibility Requirements

-      Completed DDS, DMD, BDS or equivalent with specialization in Orthodontics from any dental/ orthodontic graduate or postgraduate program in North America or International orthodontists.

-      Eligible for Educational License with College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta (CDSA) covering the full program

Policy for orthodontists in private practice

Orthodontists in private practice can practice outside the residency program at the non-dedicated time for the internship (after hours or weekends) if they obtain the required licensure in the Province/State they would practice in.

 

 

International applicants:

International candidates will not be eligible for a student VISA. As this is a CDE program, and not government-approved, candidates must obtain a different type of VISA. The Attendant of the orthodontic residency program and orthodontist at the orthodontic clinic can facilitate the interns invitation letter to apply for visiting or tourist visas.
